PDF privacy and security checklist for online tools
Use this checklist before processing a document with any online PDF product. The canonical web version is designed for citation, while downloadable PDF and SVG versions make the same questions easier to share in policies, articles, classes, and internal reviews.

Processing and transport
Confirm whether document bytes are uploaded to an application server or processed in the browser. Confirm that the public site uses HTTPS, while recognizing that HTTPS protects transport and does not prove how a provider processes or retains the document after receipt.
- Where are document bytes processed?
- Does the provider clearly distinguish browser-local and server-side work?
- Does the site explain the limits of its privacy claim?
Retention, identity, and analytics
Check whether document contents, filenames, extracted text, passwords, metadata values, or generated files are retained. Check whether registration is required and whether analytics uses only finite product events and counts rather than document-derived information.
- Is an account required?
- What document-related data is retained, and for how long?
- Can the user delete stored data when storage exists?
Capabilities and operating limits
Check maximum file size, maximum files per task, browser-memory requirements, support for encrypted or damaged PDFs, and the behavior when processing fails. Confirm that every advertised function has a working route and truthful limitations.
- Are current and planned features clearly separated?
- Are device and browser constraints disclosed?
- Does the provider recommend preserving original files and verifying output?
Document sensitivity and organizational rules
Match the tool to the document's sensitivity and the organization's approved processes. Browser-local handling does not automatically satisfy legal, contractual, regulatory, records-management, or internal-security requirements.

Limitations
- The checklist supports evaluation and discussion; it does not certify a product or replace legal, compliance, or security review.
- The downloadable formats may become outdated, so citations should point to the canonical web page for the latest version.
