How to split a large work PDF by department or section for free
PDFNova's Split PDF workflow is free and requires no registration. Identify the page ranges for each department or section, enter the ranges in the required order, generate the outputs in the browser, and verify each file before sharing it with the relevant team.

Map the sections before splitting
Open the source PDF and record the first and last page for each department, chapter, work package, approval group, or client section. Use the PDF page positions shown by the viewer rather than relying only on printed page labels.
Decide whether the task needs every page as a separate file, selected pages, or custom ranges.
- Finance section: record its complete start and end pages.
- Operations section: include supporting pages that belong with it.
- Shared cover pages: decide whether they must appear in more than one output.
Create the department or section outputs
Open Split PDF, add the source document, choose the appropriate split mode, and enter the selected pages or custom ranges carefully.
Generate the result and download the single PDF or ZIP output produced by the selected mode.
Verify and name every work file
Open each output and compare it with the range map. Confirm that the section starts and ends correctly, shared pages are included where intended, and no confidential section was sent to the wrong audience.
Rename each output using the department, section, project, date, or revision required by the work process.
- Check page count against the planned range.
- Check the first and last page of every output.
- Keep the full source PDF as the controlled original.
Limitations
- Split PDF separates complete pages; it does not remove confidential content that remains visible on a selected page.
- Printed page labels can differ from PDF page positions, so ranges must be verified in the downloaded outputs.
